멀티 프로그래밍이나 멀티 태스킹 환경에서 각각의 사용자에게 동일한 시간동안 자원을 점유할 수 있도록 하는 것.
한 명의 사용자가 자원을 점유한다고 할 때, 계속해서 사용하지 않는 한, 점유된 자원이 계속해서 사용되지는 않음.
따라서 자원이 사용되지 않을 때 다른 사용자가 자원을 사용하게 함으로써 전체적인 효율을 더 높일 수 있다.
1954년에 MIT의 여름 학기에서 John Backus가 최초로 제시했고, 1957년 Bob Bemer가 Automatic Control Magazine에 "How to consider a computer"라는 글을 기고했다. 1958년에 W. F. Bauer가 관련 논문을 썼다. Christopher Strachey가 1959년에 time-sharing 개념에 관한 특허를 출원했다. Christopher의 논문은 MIT Computation Center가 1963년에 "time-shared 컴퓨터에 관한 최초의 논문"이라고 인증 받았다.
